Summary
A data management plan is a document written before the start of a research project that outlines research data management practices.

A data management plan (DMP) provides an opportunity for you to think carefully and critically about organising, storing, describing, sharing and preserving your research data. Writing a DMP is crucial for ensuring the efficient and secure handling of research data throughout the research cycle. As such, a DMP is ideally written and reviewed before data is collected. A review can be requested via data@wur.nl or via DMPonline (see below).
How to write a data management plan?
A data management plan can be written in two ways:
1. Download the template
- Download the WUR template with guidance (.docx format) via https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11065728 or use the template of the funder
- Fill in the template
- Save your draft DMP and email it to data@wur.nl to request a review
Note: there is also a template specifically for students available https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.12805038.
2. Create a plan in DMPonline
- Create an account in DMPonline (dmp.wur.nl) and a data management plan using the manual (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10572026)
- Fill in the funder or WUR template
- Click the green ‘request feedback’ button under the ‘feedback’ tab to request a review
Note: the use of DMPonline is recommended but not a mandatory requirement for WUR researchers. However, some research groups do make the use of DMPonline mandatory. Please check whether this is the case for you, e.g. via the data steward of your research group and/or the data management protocol of your research group.
