What is a data management protocol?
A data management protocol is a document that outlines general standards for data management practices and aims for consistency across your research group. It covers topics such as: roles and responsibilities; data ownership and accessibility; data storage, archiving, and publishing; data documentation and metadata. Where a data management protocol is generic, a data management plan outlines detailed data management practices for one specific project. However, a protocol provides you with general guidelines for writing your data management plan. You can inquire about the data management protocol of your group by contacting your data steward and/or asking your supervisor.
How to write a data management protocol?
A data management protocol is generally written by the data steward. If your research group does not have a data management protocol in place yet, one can be created using the WUR data management protocol template:
- Download the WUR template with guidance (.docx format) via WUR template
- Fill in the template and have it checked/approved by your chair holder or business unit manager
- Save the draft protocol and email it to data@wur.nl to request a review (recommended)
Is a data management protocol required?
Yes, to adhere to the WUR data policy, each chair group needs to have a data management protocol. It is not mandatory for business units, but strongly recommended.
